In 1893 the worldly, eccentric dancer Jane Avril (“La Mélinite”) requested de Toulouse-Lautrec to design a poster for her performance at the Jardin de Paris. After his discharge from the psychiatric clinic de Toulouse-Lautrec again portrays Jane, who frankly admitted that she owed her fame to the posters.
