Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) Alongside Hokusai, Hiroshige is viewed as the principle exponent of ukiyo-e from the first half of the 19th century. He concentrated on drawing famous landscapes. This print in which a cat watches a festive procession meander through the rice paddies with Mount Fuji in the background is part of his famous series: One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. These woodcuts were highly praised by the Impressionists including Van Gogh and Monet.
