Gesso

Yoshimoto Gesso (1881-1936) The Japanese draftsman Gesso was part of the Shin Hanga movement which, during the first half of the 19th century breathed new life into ukiyo-e by adding elements from European impressionism to their traditional woodblock art. Bright colours, careful composition and a Western use of perspective characterise Gesso’s wonderful landscapes and appealing kacho-e drawings of birds and flowers.
