Paul Klee (1879-1940) “Kunst gibt nicht das Sichtbare wieder, sondern Kunst macht sichtbar” wrote Paul Klee in 1920. The idiosyncratic artist travelled to Munich from the village he was born in near Bern to study at the art school there. He became friends with Kandinsky and joined Der Blaue Reiter. During a long journey through Tunisia in 1914 he arrived at the insight that colour and composition were more important to him than form and from that moment on his work became more abstract. He was very productive during his years as a lecturer at the world-famous Bauhaus. In 1933 his work was declared ‘entartet’ and he returned to Bern, disillusioned.
