The crouching Woman
(1880-1882)
Like ‘The Thinker’ and many other well-known sculptures the ‘Crouching Woman’ is based on a figure from the tympan of the Gates of Hell, a bronze portal meant for the Musée des Arts Décoratifs which was never finished. There she represents, with her caryatid-like pose, powerful and vulnerable at the same time, one of the lost souls.
